Attached patch patch (obsolete) — Splinter Review
I have a patch to offer for that, based on this extension: http://en.design-noir.de/mozilla/dictionary-switcher-tb/

It doesn't dig deep into the spellchecker's core but would completely live inside of MsgComposeCommands.js.

This would also be compatible with 1.8 branches.

I suppose this doesn't work anymore, at least the extension had to be updated. It isn't the most solid solution anyway, so I'm removing the review request. However, I still think this could be implemented on a high level until the core gets a bit smarter.
