In Mac Eudora (6.2.4), folders and message panes are off by default. For those using Eudora with very large numbers of mailbox windows open at any one time, persistent of this setting is very important. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. set mailbox to hide folder + message pane 2. open new mailbox and folder + messages panes are visible Expected Results: Openning a new mailbox should create a small toc only pane - folders and message pane should be missing. Size, and settings of mailboxes are persistent between sessions, however mailbox location is not persistent (possibley mentioned in another bug)

One thing that will help is changing the setting to be in the 2-pane mode in the Penelope pref panel. Then the folders pane will not show up in mailbox windows. However, that doesn't help with the message pane, as it will still be visible. There is a way to make the message pane hidden all of the time, but it involves creating a userChrome.css file: <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Window_layout_-_Thunderbird#Layout>. Not as easy as just flipping a switch, though, so this is a pref we should add.
