E-mail applications are sort of inherently multi-tasking. The UI is doing one thing, messages are being fetched, messages are being filtered, news is being fetched, etc.

When so many things are going on it is often helpful to have an "Activity Window" which shows which background tasks are going on at any particular moment.

One is apt to be much more forgiving of UI responsiveness issues when one sees why something might be happening. Also, it gives the user more of a chance to put something meaningful in a bug report.
