Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8.0.9) Gecko/20061206 Firefox/1.5.0.9
Build Identifier: Firefox 2.0.0.1
When i double click on the firefox installer, I get a progress bar indicating the percentage of files extracted. Then the installer fails with no errors or warnings.
I've tried to extract the files manually and run the installer by double clicking the "setup.exe" file, but this only results in the setup.exe file deleting itself from the directory, with no errors or warnings.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.double click on firefox 2.0 installer
2.
3.
Actual Results:
nothing - i receive the progress bar indicating percentage of files extracted, then the installer fails.
Expected Results:
Proceed with the installation

Are you low on diskspace? And are you installing from an admin account or a user account?

Nope - I've got over 16GB of disk space left, and I've tried installing from all types of user accounts. I've also got admin priveleges and have never had any problems installing previous versions of firefox or other applications. I've also been keeping an eye on my eventlogs to see if the installer is crashing, but so far nothing reported.
Have you considered the possibility that the download was corrupt? If not, I suppose a way to check that would be to download a whole new copy, and try it, or copy a version that someone else already installed from.
(Follow-up: but, does the msi format include corruption checking -- that is, checksum or anything? zip files do. I don't know if msi does.)

I've tried numerous times to download different versions thinking it could be a corrupt download file, but i still get the same outcome.
Not sure if anyone else is experiencing the same problem whilst attempting to install on a sony vaio.
Anyway - I've given up trying to install firefox 2.0. Instead I'll continue using firfox 1.5.x.x and install the upgrades until..
Is there anything useful in the event logs?
I'd suggest trying to install again, and then immediately looking in the event logs (if you've not already tried this).
If on XP, Start/Control Panel/Administration Tools/Computer Management
then when that appears, drill down the tree on the left to
Computer Management (local)/System Tools/Event Viewer
and look in all three logs and see if any events occurred just then.

Wil: Are you logged on as Admin (or with Admin Rights) when you tried to install Firefox 2.0.0.3 ?
Can you test with a Release from http://www.getfirefox.com/
Version: unspecified → 2.0 Branch

Perry: Yep - One of the first things I did was check the event logs to see what was going on. Nothing is written to the event logs. Even after pressing the refresh button a few times. The installer just seems to terminate normally or rather abnormally.
Carsten:In response to your question, I have full admin rights on my laptop.
I've even tried expanding the zipped executable and installing it manually. nothing - same result.
Its annoying me now, i've kinda resigned to the fact that ff2 will never run on my vaio.
Have you considered trying sysinternals DebugView (or equivalent), to see if anything helpful goes by in the debug stream?

tried that - nothing is logged in debugview when i doubleclick ff2 installer. Installer still fails at the exact same position,ie. straing after its finished extracting the files.
