User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1
Menu bar is active, can click and drag window around screen. Firefox icon at left end of menu bar is white box. Cursor is hourglass/pointer, and nothing in window is clickable, but close box, minimize, etc is active. Only recourse seems to be to use task manager to force quit and restart. All Mozilla extensions and themes turned off.
PC is Pentium P4, 512MB Ram, OS=XPSP2
Machine shut down each night, restarted each morning, is not a long term use problem. No excessive memory use - with two windows open and maybe five tabs between them, Task Manager says memory use is ~65MB
Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Reproduces self after long term usage -
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Happens on daily basis, no clue what individual action might trigger it, but when it happens it is always after a refresh of current window, or clicking to go to a new URL.
Not frozen

On 2/7/2007, there were two entries added to the application log showing:
Hanging application firefox.exe, version 1.8.20061.20418, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

One thing more that I forgot when I wrote this bug report. Even before the hang occurs, there is an issue with addresses. If I type in a part of a URL, then select what I want from the history pop-up, FF does not go to the URL until I click on the green "Go" arrowhead on the address bar.

Did you try basic things like re-installing Firefox in a new empty folder and creating a new profile? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder
Also extensions can cause hangs.

please clear your history - an item in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs
if that doesn't help what happens with a new, empty profile?
I doubt bug 360677 is related.

> I doubt bug 360677 is related.
A referenced that bug, because I have found these three bugs related to Firefox hanging, and the bug 360677 is the oldest one - so I put my comments there, and put a ref. in the others. The fact Firefox hangs might came from the same issue in each of them.
> [...] what happens with a new, empty profile?
In my case it doesn't matter if I run my full profile, or virgin one. Maybe it takes a little longer on fresh profile, but finally after some time using it - it hangs.
Also, see what others people are saying on the net:
Firefox thread jpeg_fdct_islow consumes > 50% CPU
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=406320
Firefox excessive CPU usage?

(Latest response from March 12th - fresh :))
Firefox...sometimes annoying
http://anjesh.blogspot.com/2006/09/firefoxsometimes-annoying.html
So, there's something in the code, for which is hard to find the cause, and because of Firefox just freezing (no crash - no TalkBack) it's hard to write a good bug report - but that doesn't mean there's no problem.
If anyone is having any idea what can I do to better pinpoint the problem, I will try to do that.

Ria, what do you think about Bruce's response? ...
Comment 2: Hyperthreading not present, long term use is closest description. I am running with no extensions or themes
Comment 4: This is a new install with no extension or themes.
Bruce,
Do you still have the problem with FF 2.0.0.4?
You are using the default theme?
mozilla icon of menu bar is at the right side, not the left. Do you mean the shaded title bar? Can you attach a screen shot?
Can you try a trunk build for a day?
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
Why no one correct jpeg_fdct_islow CPU 50/100% usage bug for a few years yet? I can't use Firefox on all my computers and all OS. It's great bug, but if you browse only few HTML-pages at time it's no problem for you... I hate IE, don't like Opera, but can't use Firefox too... :-((
If you disable java-script, it will be no jpeg_fdct_islow bug, but many sites doesn't work too. If you change current tabs it may become to go away this bug. It is proof that it is a bug and nothing else. If you restart Firefox it may become to go away this bug too.
Clean Firefox on clean Windows XP may cause this bug too, but rarely. To see jpeg_fdct_islow bug for sure your need to open more than 10-20 tabs with java-scripts on them. Than try to work with browser for a time and this bug surely coming on.
And some information more. This bug seems to exists on Thunderbird too. And on Firefox 3.0 alpha it appear more rarely but exactly exists too. But thread name on it is different from "jpeg_fdct_islow".

no response from reporter BruceNolen and the URL WFM, so closing incomplete. BruceNolen, a screen shot showing what you see in comment 0 would be helpful because you are not clear about which icon is bad.
Please reopen the bug if you still see the problem with the latest release 2.0.0.4, also using a *new profile* in safe mode (having extensions disabled was a good test, but a new clean profile will be better)

The icon in question is the Mozilla icon at the top left corner of the window in the title bar. This icon becomes white. I am using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20070515 Firefox/2.0.0.4 -
The problem has not reoccurred since I reported it. I am running no themes or extension.
