When firefox crashes and you rerun it and hte session is restored and all your tabs are reopened, these tabs are reopened together in only one window. If you have multiple windows with multiple tabs open before the crash, it's very hard to find the tabs you were using previously.

Firefox should also preserve the number of open windows, and place the tabs correctly in the windows as part of the restore process.
Works for me with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1 and also in trunk.
Opened two windows with in each three tabs, ended the process firefox.exe in the task manager to simulate a crash and both were correctly restored on startup.
You don't mention which build you're testing (which you should always do, especially when you file a bug as NEW), but this works for me with 1.8 branch nightlies.

[Sorry, using Firefox 2.0.0.1. For some reason I thought the browser autofilled in version info in bugzilla.]

When I changed the Tabs option 'New pages should be opened in' from 'tab' to 'window' Firefox's behaviour changed - it started restoring sessions with tabs grouped in windows, and also asking whether it should restore sessions or start a new session with the dialog at start. I hadn't seen this dialog previously on this installation of Firefox while getting all tabs grouped in one window, and had just presumed that the dialog had been turned off here via some option I'd missed.

Does session restore depend on the 'New pages...' option in any way?

This sounds like you've been using an extension (most probably Tab Mix Plus, less probably SessionSaver .2d) to restore your sessions which offers to restore all tabs into the same window. Can you reproduce the behavior of comment #0 on a clean profile?

No - unless there's an extension interfering with how Firefox is supposed to handle tabs/windows.

The only extensions installed on this Firefox are:

Adblock 0.5.3.043
Adblock Filterset.G updater 0.30.5
Google Toolbar for Firefox 3.0.20070201W
Talkback 2.0.0.1

No obvious tab/session effects there.
Reporter: If this still happens: can you reproduce this issue on a clean profile? Otherwise, this is WORKSFORME.
