Thunderbird version 2 beta 2 (20070219)
I tend to leave Thunderbird running all the time. I have seen this behavior repeatedly over the last few weeks, across several nightlies, I don't know how long it's been happening though.
After Thunderbird has been running for a day or so, it will suddenly pick one account seemingly at random, and decide that it can no longer delete or move messages in this account. Whether the account is pop3 or imap doesn't seem to be important, it happens to both. This usually first manifests itself by many messages that are marked as Junk remaining in the inbox instead of being moved to the Junk folder. Trying to move the messages manually fails. Neither deleting nor moving the messages manually works, even on other messages that weren't marked as Junk. Moving and deleting messages continues to work fine in all other accounts (I have 6 defined in Thunderbird). The only way I've found to get the delete/move functionality back in that account is to quit and re-launch Thunderbird.

I'm not finding any corraborating information in bug reports or newsgroups (not touching forums though)
what happens if you attempt to do other operations on the account in question - compact, empty trash, new folder, subscribe, search, ...?
what if junk processing is off? (would be nice to eliminate that factor)

new folder, delete folder, empty trash still work (I have a pop3 account experiencing these symptoms as I type). Just move/delete aren't working, and only in that account. Marking junk works fine, but it doesn't move when you junk it, probably because move/delete aren't working. If anyone knows of anything I can poke at with gdb or somesuch, I'm willing. :)

I have a very similar behavior on Thunderbird 1.5.0.10, Mac OS X 1.4 in my main IMAP account.
After a quite short time (under 30 min) and 3-5 message moving operations + switching to other apps and back, Thunderbird simply refuses to move any message around, be it to the Trash or to any other folder. Restarting Thunderbird solves the problem but it comes back with annoying regularity.
I also suspected an association with junk marking but right now I have a fresh Thunderbird restart, no operations done, and it happens again.
My inbox is quite large (5000+) and it has many large subfolders.
I can do long Thunderbird sessions without this problem, but on some sessions it happens quite early, especially if I work in some other program and return to Thunderbird every now and then.
I too have had the same problems. I am on WinXP Media Center Edition using Thunderbird version 1.5.0.10 (20070221).
I recently set up a message filter on my inbox to filter any email messages with the word [SPAM] in the subject line from my inbox upon arrival to the junk folder I set up under that account. (I too have multiple accounts and the account I set up the filter on was the one unable to delete any messages.)
What I did recently that I think (key phrase is "think") fixed it is this: I edited the message filter to instead of sending the Spam email to my junk folder, that I instead send them directly to the trash folder. Immediately after doing this, I was able to delete messages from this account's inbox.
This just started happening after I applied the message filter...so if you are using the filter functionality, this may help.

Many thanks for the tip Lisa!
I've disabled all my IMAP inbox filters yesterday and since then I can happily move messages around.
The fact that you have the same problem on Windows shows that it's not a Mac OS specific issue.
Also, the fact that I was using exactly these filters on my previous Windows machine but with an older thunderbird shows that this bug appeared in the recent 1.5 and 2.0 thunderbird code.

Lisa, Christian - are your IMAP filters moving messages to folders on the same imap server, or to local folders?

for me it's both.
one of my local folders is a former pop account which I don't connect to any longer. but besides that, there are "true" local folders filters that move to my only imap server.

So you have a pop3 account with filters that move messages to an imap folder?
| Reporter | ||
Comment 9•19 years ago
|
||
For the record, I have no filters that move anything between accounts or between an account and a local folder. All of my filters on pop3 accounts move things to different folders within the same account. All of my IMAP accounts have no filters whatsoever except for the automatic Junk stuff. The IMAP accounts all have server-side filtering that moves things to different mailboxes before Thunderbird even checks it.
As mentioned, I see this periodically on both pop3 and imap accounts, so it doesn't seem to be related to a given protocol (unless it's related to code both share in common).
Comment 10•19 years ago

Mine are moving to local folders. My email is collected in the inbox (I have multiple email accounts each with their own account inbox - I don't use the global inbox for all accounts), then it is filtered to another folder under that account locally. i.e. Trash or Junk Folder.

TB version 2.0.0.0 (20070326)
Similar situation here.
I have a saved search folder aggregate messages from several pop3 accounts.
I manually move messages from the saved search folder to a subfolder of the local box.
Sometimes I find that I cannot move them anymore.
I've also tried going to the original folder (instead of using the Saved Search Folder) and moving the message from there, but it still refused to move.
I've tried compacting folders and haven't noticed any change.
Restarting Thunderbird clears the problem up temporarily.

Similar problem here. So far only appears on my main IMAP account which is an Exchange IMAP connection. I do have filters enabled and SPAM moves messages to a SPAM folder on the Exchange IMAP server. I deleted my old profile and created a new one and that seemed to help the problem go away for a few weeks but now it is back.
Basically sometimes I notice that I'm not receiving new messages in my Inbox, and try and click on different messages and the preview pain will not update. Just sits there. Have to QUIT the application and restart then everything is fine again.
This is on Mac OSX 10.4.9, other standard apps running usually at the same time are Firefox 2.0.0.4 and Adium.
I run the nightly Thunderbird builds, currently 2.0.0.4pre (20070524) and they update pretty much each day automatically.

I'm using 2.0.0.4 on an OSX portable, with a single IMAP and multiple POP accounts; using filter rules to move both from IMAP and POP inboxes to other IMAP folders.
In my case this happens very often when I wake up the portable (let's say 9 out of 10 times) but never during normal usage, though I practically never leave the portable turned on for more than a day.
As other people noted restarting Thunderbird will fix this, except that mail marked as spam is not automatically moved from the inbox and I have to delete it manually and with the current volume of spam this is the really annoying part.

FWIW, I've noticed a pattern. I'm on the nightly updates channel for software update. And this seems to almost always kick in if I'm prompted for an update and tell it "Later" instead of "Restart now".

Dave, so you're using a 2.0.0.xpre build - which gets updated nightly, right? And that was also true when you made comment 0?
Have you determined a pattern to what account is affected, or does it still seem random?

Yes.

Yes.

It still seems entirely random. And the pattern still holds, I've never seen it happen before being prompted for an update, although it doesn't always happen right away, sometimes it's a few hours or a day later (so maybe the update is a red herring, and it's some other time-based factor, but figured it was worth mentioning).

I have a similar problem, that has been happening for well over a year at least once a week.
I have 2 POP accounts, manually initiating downloads to separate inboxes.
The junk mail filters are active and send junk to the individual junk folders.
There are also several filters running that move messages to a separate "to be trained" folder.
The "Drag to"/"move to"/"file to"/"copy to" commands work initially for the first several times then subsequently fail to allow messages to be moved, copied or filed to a specific folder. It appears that the destination folder remains locked after the move completes.
The moves are typically from a mark and drag command from a search folder and the messages are located in 1 to 4 folders, and the destination is is the root of the local folder. I have had this happen when dragging from folder to folder as well.
The larger the number of messages moved the greater the likelyhood it will fail.
A restart of Thunderbird will allow me to move messages to that folder again but it will frequently fail again if I am moving a lot of emails around even when I didn't download new emails since the restart.
Also the move/drag/file command can fail within the first minute after a start of TB.
I'm currently using:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070728 Thunderbird/2.0.0.6 ID:2007072817${Flags}

It happened again, the error console only had this one error in it. (see below)
It was one message that would not move to one specific folder.
The same message moved to another folder fine.
I tried to move any message to that folder with move to, file to and copy messages via drag and drop, the menu, the file to button and the right click commands.
All attempts to move or copy to that folder failed.
I was able to move messages from that locked folder to other folders.
I'm still using:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070728 Thunderbird/2.0.0.6 ID:2007072817${Flags}

Does offline then online fix it up? (instead of shut down)
anything in error console ala comment 18?

hmm, "later" is the only choice which leaves thunderbird up :) Perhaps software update induced Thunderbird to fail on some timer issue while the software update was being downloaded?
It's interesting that for you only move/delete fail, similar behavior to what to what happens on some filtering failures

I still experience it in Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 (20071031) on osx ppc (which is the latest official build, I think). In the error console I see only errors from filters complaining about malformed headers in spam messages.

It happened at least twice since Christmas holiday, version was 2.0.0.6, I will report back now that I am updated to 2.0.0.9.
It seems to be quantity dependent, 50 messages in one download is the usual low end and 1000+ virtually guarantees it will stop allowing moves after first or second move.

ARGH!!! Soon as I say it hasn't happened in months, it happens again. Just a single time though, so it could have been an IMAP server issue. I'm upgrading to last nights nightly build (which for all I know is still 20071226) and will see if that makes a difference.
I am running: version 2.0.0.12pre (20071226) which I just received this morning via an auto-update.

Has only happened a SINGLE time for me in the last year. I'm pretty sure that single time was an IMAP Server problem as well. So, not sure what fixed this last year, but definitely been fixed for a very long time in the nightly builds which I use every weekday for 8-12 hours a day, and every weekend day for an hour or two.

This happens to me regularly, often several times a day. Junk mail gets marked as junk but stops getting moved (from IMAP inbox to another IMAP folder). I haven't found a way to kick Thunderbird back into life apart from restarting it. I'm using 3.0a1 on Linux.

Comment 31•18 years ago

I can (tentatively) confirm what other people are seeing. The whole problem is that I am using TB in conjunction with Gmail using IMAP, and I had a message rule set up to move messages to a folder that exists locally but not on the server side. I fixed it by moving the folder from under my local Gmail folder and put it under Local Folders, adjusting the filtering rule according. This all brings us to a larger problem -- TB and Gmail seem to have an uneasy co-existence, with some warts and blemishes that need to be fixed.
Comment 32•17 years ago
|
||
Exact same behavior I described in Comment #12 below has popped up for me since in the last two days. It has not happened in over a year though, and is suddenly back. There are two things that have happened since Thu Oct 16th; I've been using nightly builds and I also created a new test profile on the 16th to try and correct some message duplication issues. Neither of those two things have fixed my message duplication issues, and now I'm getting the lock ups as described above.
I have switched back to the Alpha2 build which has been rock solid for me. I am using the new/test profile I had created for Alpha 3 though. If the problem comes back with that profile it would lend evidence to it having to do with Offline Mail Folders since it is a profile created with Alpha 3 and I believe all of that Offline stuff defaults to on.
Further evidence is that last year when I reported this issue I was playing around with Offline folders, and even though I'd disabled then in the profile at that time, I'm sure I created a new profile somewhere along the way with Nightlies so that may have fixed any leftover Offline folder issues. Will report back this afternoon since the lockups happen pretty regularly.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091204 Thunderbird/3.0
I will try again with no extensions running over the next week.
Do I need to create a new profile or is the old one adequate for this test?
If I need a new profile please point to a primer on backing up and importing just the basic settings and messages into the new profile for 3.0.

Activity log of error timeline, started app this morning and it happened again for first time since I disable and or uninstalled all extensions.
No extensions are running currently, TB is still active and I will try not to shut it down in case you want me to try something. The Error console is empty.
Last move was from a search folder to a storage folder at 8:26AM.
All subsequent moves to that folder fail, moves to other folders work.
I did archive the folder as it is after trying to rebuild the index.
Files can be moved out of the folder but then cannot be moved back in.
The folder was created on January the 1st and has only been accessed 2 or 3 times prior to this failure.
Anything else I should try?

No, the "Spam.To.2010-01-31" folder.

Jestre, thx for the info. I suspect your issue is specific to or at least exacerbated by using drag drop of messages from multiple source folders to a single destination folder (e.g., using the move/copy menu items, for the message pane context menus might behave better). The reason is that the drag drop code attempts to do all the moves at once, which relies on the copy service to partition the moves into different folders, which it does do, but not always reliably. Justdave, do you do drag drop of messages from multiple source folders as well?

Logs are not likely to be too helpful since we don't have logging in the copy service. The core problem that jestre is seeing (getting simultaneous move/copies from multiple sources going into the same target folder) is probably responsible for most of the issues - what happens is that we never clear the folder lock on the target folder, and subsequent move/copies to that target folder are rejected.
