This is more of an request. I think thunderbird should use the STARRED convention more making it easy to FLAG messages, then open a saved search folder to later do something with the mail. The current flag as is just to cumbersome

Thunderbird 2 (currently in beta 2) already does. Create a view where you filter for Status = Starred. Ok, maybe it wasn't very intuitive that you have to use Status.

Saw beta 2 - OK. Looks much better (Dont know how it works that it is not available in 3.01a
