Note the three kinds of locks in the lower right hand corner. I am requesting a
more detailed and professional set of locks.
QA Assigning non-confidential New/Assigned User Interface: Design Feedback bugs
to Matthew Thomas (mpt@mailandnews.com).

Matthew Thomas is now the QA owner for the User Interface: Design Feedback
component. (Bugs that involve UI issues in the Netscape-branded Mozilla browser
should continue be QA assigned to elig@netscape.com.)

Looks Netscape-specific to me (the URLs given sure are, anyway) ... --> elig

John, is there any easy way that this bug could be rephrased to use URLs
accessible by non-Netscape participants? (The QA owner for this component is a
non-Netscape employee.)

Otherwise, I can be the surrogate QA contact. Thanks!
You can use http://www.yahoo.com for insecure (unlocked lock icon),
https://www.verisign.com for a secure site (locked lock icon). I don't know of a
mixed content site outside the firewall to show the mixed lock icon, but you can
view the gif file by dragging it into Navigator from
I believe \components\navigator\chrome\default.
Thanks, John! QA Assigning back to Matthew.

Attached file Proposed icons
I've attached 3 alternative icons.
They're a little more colourful and (hopefully) more clear.

What alterations did you have in mind? (if any)
Regards,
I copied the files into Win32 build 2000051508 into
chrome\skins\modern\navigator\skin. It is very difficult to see what they are a
picture of, especially the lock.gif file. At least the old files were darker and
clearer. I was hoping for a clear, detailed set of gifs, like the lock icons in
the lower left of 4.X.
I'll make some more then :)
Is 12x12 the sizelimit forthe .gifs?
It's not very much to work with...
Attached file icons #2
These are more like the NN4.x kinds (although I couldn't find the image for
'broken')

Alternatively, I could make something more abstract with red-orange-green,
traffic-light like.

Apart from keys and locks there aren't many obvious desings..
If you don't mind, I would like four icons.

1- broken
2- low security
3- high security
4- no security

The style of the three new ones looks OK to me.
How about:
1- broken
- question mark thingy or something?
Does this mean security unknown?

2- low security
- a dimly lit lock

3- high security
- a brightly lit lock

4- no security
- an open gate or door, or opened lock..?
Attached file icons #3
Some new ones...

Broken: greyed lock
no security: red backdrop
low security: orange backdrop
high security: green backdrop

Since the red-orange-green is pretty obvious for most people (IMHO)
The Key Icons that Netscape used in versions prior to 4.x were clearer than the
lock icons that were introduced in 4.x. They also used a key with 1 tooth or 2
teeth to distingush between low and high security. Having different graphic
symbols, rather than using different colors will also prevent accessibility
problems for color blind people.
Chaning the qa contact on these bugs to me. MPT will be moving to the
owner of this component shortly. I would like to thank him for all his hard
work as he moves roles in mozilla.org...Yada, Yada, Yada...

Removing moving blocked bug. This is a button image, not an icon issue.
No longer blocks: icons
If the current page was not encrypted, I think the security area of the status
bar should be blank. Anything else is unnecessarily confusing.
