instead it overwrites existing (without asking) and furthermore also does not fill forms out with the "new" username entry
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. go to any webpage where username 9 password is needed
2. save your password/username as usual
3. close the browser and open the previos webpaeg again -> firefox will not fill out the password field and most of tehtime teh username will also not set in any textfield
Actual Results:
username and password will not fill out
Expected Results:
username and password should be filed out from the password manager
is it a new german version bug ;-)

I downloaded Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.8.1.2) Gecko/20070219 Firefox/2.0.0.2 and loaded it with my old password files.
I went to http://forums.mozillazine.org/login.php and made a new password.
After a restart it filled in the password automatically.
Is your Remember Passwords window empty?
Do you have a signons.txt or a signons2.txt in your profile? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder
Dupe of Bug 371554 ?

OK, you said "most of the time". So there should be a signons2.txt file present. In that case it rather seems to be related to Bug 371525.
Could you give a URL where the problem shows up?

Summary: firefox does not fillout passwords and usernames inf orms → firefox does not fill out passwords and usernames in forms
I was just given an update for my Firefiox 1.5.0.10. Since it was installed the remember password function responds erratically. It was doing fine before the latest update that came in on Friday or Saturday.

I´ve the same problem with an Firefox 2.0.0.2 english installation on a german Windows host System.
So my operating System is Windwos XP Professional and Firefox updated automatically from the prvious Version to 2.0.0.2.
For example i always used to go to http://www.gmail.com to check emails. I only had to click once on the login field, selected my login and the password was filled out automatically by Firefox. But since the 2.0.0.2 update it doesn´t work anymore? I figured this behavior out on every page i used to login.
Even on pages programmed on my own.
So there have to be a bug/problem maybe in combination with the german OS?

Behavior Update:
When i check in for example to gmail the first time the password was not filled out automatically. But the second time the pwd-manager worked again. So it seems new entered Passwords are filled out correctly.
May it be, that the manager is not able to access the old stored pwds? But in Tools->Options->Security->Show Passwords the list is complete. Even with old stored passwords.
signons2.txt is available
btw:
the "save passwords" option was disabled after the upgrade
(extra -> security-> save passwords)
I'm sure that I have never changed this setting, on a vmware guest firefox does the same.
the problem appears on every page which needs signup information

The problem appears with the german versions 1.5.0.10 and 2.0.0.2 for linux too.
Even after downgrading to a prior version the problem remains :-(

Yes i found out, that the problem occurs due to a change to the password-manager. The format for the file signons2.txt in your profile changed. the developer know about this issue but this problem have to be carried out for better security in den pm. So i think they not even try to fix this, because the do not interpret the problem as a dataloss problem. I found another bug-report covering the same problem unfortunatelly i don´t know the bug number by hard.
So the only solution is to reenter all saved passwords.
