If you startup w/o an INBOX.msf file for the imap account that's loaded on startup, we leave the thread pane blank until you click away and back. The fix is to set the m_updatingFolder member var sooner, so that the double selects that happen from the front end on startup (from biff, and selecting the inbox) don't confuse us.
