confirmed on 2000042708 win98, might be a dup though. are <select>'s inverting forecolor at all or are they actually hardcoded white? bumping up severity just a bit....

oops didn't mean to change OS to win98; in any case, this seems to occur on all win32 platforms. I assume it's on all platforms, but can anyone with linux or mac verify?

I am not sure this is actually a bug. We use a specific style rule with an attribute selector to show the options that are selected. The attached example overrides the style for the options when they are selected or unselected. If you add this rule to your example, it looks/works great: .selHead[-moz-option-selected] { color: white; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline; } There may be an ourstanding question as to whether the selected style rule should override the user's specified style. But, since we are use the style system and those rules are well defined, a user can not expect the attribute selector style rule in the html.css to override the user's style. marking as invalid since it isn't really a bug.

Also, the two options that have the style "class" defined should really be opt groups, that way they can't be selected.
Not opt-groups, because I actually do want them selectable in my application. Furthermore, I shouldn't have to specify a mozilla-specific CSS attributes to get my page to render, should I? IE5, while it doesn't bold the styled options, does get the color and the color inversion correct. > system and those rules are well defined, a user can not expect the attribute > selector style rule in the html.css to override the user's style but the 'selected' state is a special case, where the CSS spec does not have a method of overriding. I know that CSS does not specify an 'invert' value for colors, but perhaps the default rule in HTML.CSS should similar to the following: select option[-moz-option-selected] { color:white; background-color:invert; /* inverts the (foreground) 'color' } or if not this, then the both the 'color' and 'background-color' [-moz-option- selected] should be ! important

I keep forgetting about "!important", that is a good suggestion which I just tested out. As it turns out this is a duplicate of a bug I had marked "later". Bug 25869
