User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3

When using Firefox 2.0.0.2, and the update to 2.0.0.3 was downloaded and applied, the update failed with the following error message "One or more files could not be updated. Please make sure all other applications are closed and that you have permission to modify file, and then restart Firefox to try again. this window has only an OK button. Click OK, and the entire process starts over again with the same results.

I am the administrator of this stand alone PC and have all administrator rights. Same result if I try the update from Windows Safe Mode.

I un-installed Firefox and tried to load from the complete version 2.0.0.3 download and got the following error message: "Error opening file for writing: \r\n\r\ncomponents\r\n\r\nClick Retry to try again, or/r/nCancel to stop the installation."

Had to restore my hard drive to get Firefox back.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Just repeat the above.
2.
3.

Expected Results:
same results

The error messages should tell the user what is going on or make the instleer overcome these problems. The second error message with the /r/n/r.... tells the User nothing!

Something is pretty horked. If you could tell us about any customizations, extensions you have installed, it might be helpful. I am sure you just want to get back to browsing but if you could help us try to figure out what went wrong it would be great.

Please open c:\Documents and Settings\youruserid\Local Settings\Application in Windows explorer (not Internet Explorer). Then search for a folder named updates. You should find it underneath a directory for Firefox. It you can attach any log files you find there it might help us figure out what went wrong.

Then reinstall Firefox as follows:

1. Make sure you have the Firefox installer on your disk somewhere.
2. Use Add-Remove Programs to uninstall Firefox.
3. Delete the entire directory where you had installed Firefox. Your bookmarks and settings are stored somewhere else so this won't affect them.
4. Install Firefox.

Thanks for reporting this and for helping out.

Sounds like a dupe of Bug 364710

When you try to install firefox, please check that Firefox is not running and no Files are in use (you can check this also via the taskmanager)

Please see also http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=2658892#2658892
I have the following extensions loaded: Chatzilla 0.9.77, FoxClocks 2.0.20, Hebrew Calendar 1.04.41, IE Tab 1.3.1.20070126, IE View 1.3.2, New Tab Button on Tab Bar 2.0, Open Profile Folder 1.1.5, Print/Print Preview .4, United States Dictionary 2.0.0.6, Video Downloads 1.1.1, Yahoo Toolbar 1.3.0.20060829.

Also, when I tried to load from the full Firefox Installer, before you suggestions in reply to this problem, as I said above,I un-installed Firefox and tried to load from the complete version 2.0.0.3 download and got the following error message: "Error opening file for writing: \r\n\r\ncomponents\r\n\r\nClick Retry to try again, or/r/nCancel to stop the installation." The main Mozzilla Firefox Setup Window, in the progress bar says "Installing Optional Components...".

Hope this helps you all out. I will try and unintall Firefox and then delete all of its "Program Files" folders and then try and reinsall and see what happens. I will not be able to try that until late tonight. Have to work on my clients since I am a CPA and this si my very busy time of year.

Tomcat - Yes that comment is the same thing that happens to me - only when the
Firefox Update routine is trying to update Firefox. The only way to stop the never ending Firefox restart and update routine is to end Firefox in the Task Manager and then delete 'active-update.xml, updates xml and the updates folder. Firefox then runs and if you ask it to check for updates, the same never ending automatic update failure re-start Firefox and update failure.

Bob, how do I attach the log files here?
Towards the top of this bug there is a gray box containing a link to "Add an attachment". Click that and then using the file control select the file to be attached. These will be text files, so select the type as plain text. Don't attach anything confidential! :-)

Also, I wanted to make sure that you DO NOT DELETE C:\Program Files folder. That contains all of the programs installed on your machine and you will be really in trouble if you do that.

Just delete the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder.
Please file a separate bug for software update.

Steve, the app's components directory could not be created. Could you open the install location and check if there is a components directory? If there is could you try renaming it? It appears that the permissions on this dir may have been changed.
Summary: Update fails and so does full install → Full install fails - unable to create components directory
I have a 'component' and a 'components' directory. Which one do you want me to rename? Also, somehow I got Firefox reloaded, running 2.0.0.3 now.
There shouldn't be a component directory - at least not from our installer, etc.

Please check the components directory and also provide info as to what files are in the additional component directory.
Here is a JPEG of a screen shot of the first part of my 'components' folder in my Firefox installation. I will create three more attachments with the rest of the screen shot JPEGs. Hope this helps you out.

Here is part 1 of my 'components' folder.
This is a JPEG of the last part of the contents of my 'components' folder in my Firefox 2.0.0.3 installation. Hope these JPEG's of the screen shots help you our.

Steve, thanks for the images but I asked for the following.

Robert, I was responding your comment to me, see comment #10. I do have a 'components' and a 'component' directory. May I renamed the 'original' 'components' directory to 'components' before I tried to reload, I do not now w remember. If you look at the contents of my 'component' directory, the files have a modified date of 2/19/07 and 2/21/07.

If you want me to again want me to rename both directories I now have reload, I will do that.

Please let me know. Oh, I have checked the 'permissions' on the directories. The directories have 'Security' set to all checked except 'Special Permissions' for the Administrator, and I am in the Administrators Group.
I don't follow this

Does this mean you renamed the components directory to something other than components? Perhaps as component? If so, that explains why you have a component directory.

Do you remember permissions at all on any directories (e.g. root of C, Program Files, Mozilla Firefox, or components)?

This is the Update Log file
This is the Install log dated 5/31/07 at 12:25 pm EDT
Again, updating to Firefox 2.0.0.4, the update failed many times. Then the update seems to have been done but I still have an update folder under local settings. The logs that were created seem to say some items did not install. I have attached the Update log from my 'Local Settings/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Mozilla Firefex/Updates/0' folder. I also tried to install Firefox 2.0.0.4 from the full install file I downloaded. That also failed. I have also attached the Install.log form the folder C:\Proghram Files/Mozilla\Mozilla Firefox' folder. That log seems to indicate that the 'Talkback' Folders and components could not be installed and I do not have a folder by that name. I have also posted a Microsoft Word Doc that is a screen shot of the error message window I get firefox tries / tried to update .
Per comment #8 did you file a separate bug for the software update case? If not, could you please and either way add a comment regarding what you found for the software update case?

The components directory in question is the one for talkback.

Please check the permissions on the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\talkback@mozilla.org
and
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\talkback@mozilla.org\components
directories and post back what you have found. Thanks.
Reporter - have you tried the steps in comment #23?
What I had done a while back was to completely delete all Firefox folders under the Program Files folders. I did not delete the Firefox folders under the Documents and Settings folder. I then reinstalled Firefox and it loaded fine. I think sometime right after Version 2.0 was relesed an undate to Firefox blew down and caused all of the problems I had updating Firefox. Since deleting all Folders and reinstalling Firefox, all updates have applied corectly anbd without errors.
installation error - 203 and -228
Resolving -> incomplete since the problem as reported can no longer be reproduced due to blowing away the original install.
