unless i'm missing something and the second one is a superset of the first one. writing overly complex queries that waste time but do not help limit searches is not something a query UI should encourage.

The error is due to the value of parameter "value-1-1-0=" is too long, (see below)
Why we are creating that param?
It contains the same set of values of the "component" parameter (but as an escaped comma separated list)
which is redundant...
Also why cant we use a numeric id for "component" parameter instead of its long text value.

That does make the query a bit smaller although it's convenient to see and be able to enter the full names. This also makes the URL more portable if two installations use same component names. I think better solution for limiting query URL length is by removing parameters that have default or blank values. This is covered in bug 15809.

Yeah, I can reproduce this on bmo using steps from comment #4. New Firefox profile is not needed as problem is not in the browser one uses. Same thing happens with IE too. I can also reproduce this on non-modified 2.22 branch, 3.0 branch and trunk instances. The generated Edit Search link contains duplicated Boolean Chart entries in addition to normal control entries. The search URL itself does not contain these so problem happens when we generated the link. Even selecting only one product does it. The Boolean Chart entries are simply ignored when going back to edit the query so this is not a visible problem. So this only gets to be a serious problem when many normal search items are selected (like gazillion of components in Core product on bmo). There's no reason for us to do this so I consider this a bug.

The problem about too long queries is already reported in bug 290977, despite that one is specific to IE.

This bug is not duplicate of bug 290977. This bug is due to incapability at sever side to accept long query. as well as an unnecessary "value-1-1-0=" parameter in the query string. bug 290977 is about client (IE) unable send long query. even though solution for bug 290977 may solve this also.
