Did you download it from here? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/browse/type:3
... and used the Add-ons > Install...
Works fine for me.

Yes as you said, but does not install into Thunderbird. when you look at the e-mail and type a new one and spell the word in Australian English (eg. colour) the dictionary comes up with US Eng spelling and nothing else although I have followed all installation steps.

You can choose which dictionary to use from the Spell button.

Australian dictionary works fine for me with thunderbird 2.0.
But as noted, you need to *download the file* and to through the Add-ons > install, not just click install in firefox - that will install it into firefox.
