User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3
Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.0 (20070326)
If I try to search a mail newsgroup account, then the search result is always empty. It does not find anything even if the search criteria is obvious (e.g. Subject contains A). It does not matter if the actual newsgroup is selected for offline use.
This bug occurs with version 1.5.0.5 (20060719)
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a news account (I tried news.microsoft.com)
2. Select the newgroup in the folder view
3. Right-click on it and select 'Searh' ion the pop-up menu
4. Enter a trivial criteria
5. Observe that on the search dialog the text "No matches found" appear and the results list is empty.
Actual Results:
Search result was empty
Expected Results:
List of messages with subject that contain the letter A
Tried in 3-pane view.

Reporter: I suggest upgrading to Thunderbird 2, which shipped today ->http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/. I know for a fact that you can search newsgroups, since I do it every do with the mozilla feedback newsgroup.

I've tried in version 2.0.0.0 (20070326) (see bug description).
I'va also tried this on news.mozilla.org, but search returns an arror message:
"A News (NNTP) error occured: xpat not supported"

i guess this depend on the NNTP Server, since i get the same error message like in comment #3, but search over the toolbar works fine.

Duplicate of bug 147884.
You can use the toolbar search to search locally downloaded messages (or go to Offline mode)
The news.mozilla.org problem is due to xpat being disabled on giganews (host n.m.o)
The news.microsoft.com problem is explained by https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=210784#c22 I've no idea why this is the case but it appears to be correct.
