The text uses only half the width of the input field. As soon as you type a character, the text is suddenly rendered correctly. Affected versions of firefox: 1.5 on Windows XP, 2.0 on Windows XP, 2.0 on Linux.
This was fixed on trunk, by Bug 300030. You can try it out: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/ Resolving WORKSFORME.

You are right it works in 3.0. Sorry for posting duplicates. Can it be fixed in 2.0 also?
