User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; nl; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3
Build Identifier: Version 2.0.0.0 (20070326)

Since the latest (Dutch) version of Thunderbird (Version 2.0.0.0 (20070326) ), my mails are marked as read, when they arrive in my mailbox. I see them arriving and they are marked as unread. After the message in the right corner shows me the mail information (sender, short summary of the mail), the mail is marked as read.

When I disable the option that shows the message in the right corner, the mail keeps marked as unread, until I read the message.

It only happens with all my IMAP accounts, not with RSS feeds or POP3.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Turn on the option to show the message in the right corner, with mail summary and sender.
2. Send yourself a new email to an IMAP account.
3. When you receive the mail, the mail will be shown as read, when the message in the right corner dissapears.
4. Now disable this option in the preference menu.
5. Send yourself a new email to an IMAP account.
6. When you receive the mail, the mail will be shown as unread, even after a few seconds.

Expected Results:
Normally, all the incoming mails keep unread, until I read them or mark them as read.
This is most likely a bug in the imap server - in order to fetch the preview text for the new mail alert, we "peek" at the message, which is not supposed to mark the message read, but can on some broken imap servers. Do you know what IMAP server you're using?
No I don't know. But I'll ask it!
Version: unspecified → 2.0
Hi

the software used on the IMAP server, is Courier-IMAP 4.1.1.

I want to mention, other people on this server, with the same software version, do not have problems regarding my problem. Can I check a value or whatever? Perhaps it is a configuration setting which is set wrong during installation?

Kind regards
Another thing

When I disable the option "show example text" (I don't know what's the correct translation, the first option), the message appears, and my email keeps unread.
I have noticed this problem as well. In my case our IMAP server is MS Exchange Server 2003. I have just customized my alert to remove "Message Preview Text" to see if this keeps the mail unread.
I have exactly this same problem. Disabling the "Message Preview Text" option in the alert settings corrects the problem. I am using an IMAP server (not sure which one, but I can find out if needed) and Avast antivirus.
According to this post on Moz TB Support,

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=549666#2887769

the problem is caused by Avast! AV and can probably be fixed by updating to the latest version.

Is there any evidence of cases where Avast! is not involved?

Are all cases posted here associated with Avast?
Indeed. I turned on: "show example text" and I see an example text. Nice, because I have Avast. So that will be the problem.

Have you applied the Avast! update and rebooted Windows?
After that, with the TB "show example text" alert preview switch on, do you still see unread mail marked as read?

Whereas it looks very likely to prove this particular bug can be closed, isn't it rather hasty to close it before the proof?
Yes. I did the update, before it still didn't worked. I went on vacation 2 weeks ago en came back yesterday. Today I updated Avast, rebooted, turned on "show example text", and nothing of my mails where marked as read when they arrived.

For me it's solved. And Avast is the one to blame ;)

Agreed, now you described what happened. What you said before was different and didn't describe what fixed the problem for you or how.
