This bug is a direct consequence of bug 346651 (and of several of its duplicates). Actual results -------------- 1- Installing Thunderbird, Windows Double click the Thunderbird Setup 1.5.exe installer to start the install. 2- Uninstalling Thunderbird, Windows From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. When the Control Panel appears, double click Add/Remove Programs. Find "Mozilla Thunderbird (1.5)" in the list and click Remove to uninstall. Expected results ---------------- 1- Installing Thunderbird, Windows Double click the Thunderbird Setup 1.5.exe installer to start the install. If you are upgrading from Thunderbird 1.0.x, you do not explicitly need to uninstall Thunderbird 1.0.x first. Thunderbird setup program will delete the older version's (program, not personal) contents if you're upgrading into the same directory (folder) as the older version. If you are upgrading from Thunderbird 1.5.x and to Thunderbird 2.x, you do not absolutely need to uninstall Thunderbird 1.5.x first. Thunderbird setup program will delete the older version's (program, not personal) contents if you're upgrading into the same directory (folder) as the older version. 2- Uninstalling Thunderbird, Windows Restart Windows in Safe Mode (after the memory counting, press F8 and choose Safe Mode). From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. When the Control Panel appears, double click Add/Remove Programs. Find "Mozilla Thunderbird (1.5)" in the list and click Remove to uninstall.
The uninstall instructions could also pinpoint more precisely versions 1.5.0.10 and 1.5.0.11 like this: Uninstalling Thunderbird, Windows From the Start menu, choose Control Panel. When the Control Panel appears, double click Add/Remove Programs. Find "Mozilla Thunderbird (1.5)" in the list and click Remove to uninstall. Note: If you are trying to uninstall Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 or 1.5.0.11, then restart Windows in Safe Mode (after the memory counting, press F8 and choose Safe Mode). Then, from the Start menu, choose Control Panel. When the Control Panel appears, double click Add/Remove Programs. Find "Mozilla Thunderbird (1.5)" in the list and click Remove to uninstall.

Updating summary to help searching
Summary: Thunderbird release notes on how to upgrade TB should be updated → Thunderbird release notes on how to uninstall or to upgrade TB should be updated
Because of what is said in bug 337937 regarding TB 1.5.0.2 and 1.5.0.4, we may assume that the uninstall process of all 1.5.0.x versions may have working problems.
In bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=346651 I have posted a workable solution for the uninstaller that is broken for Win ME. Trick is to fallback to the 1.5.0.0 uninstallthunderbird.exe.
Thunderbird 2 Release Notes, Installing Thunderbird 2: "Please note that installing Thunderbird 2 will overwrite your existing installation of Thunderbird. You won't lose any of your mail (...)" http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/2.0.0.9/releasenotes/#install
Can someone summarize what the status of this bug is and what needs to be done?
As best I can tell for the Tb 2.0.0.x builds is this bug in now invalid as the new installer used by 2.0.0.x superseded the defective installer used by the 1.5.0.x branch. Therefor I suggest this bug be closed, marked as INVALID or WORKSFORME.
Sounds like it's fixed in a new version so I'll mark fixed. thanks

Also a note, the URL referenced is obsolete as it points to Tb 1.5 and the current notes are at: http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/2.0.0.17/releasenotes/
