we have firefox 2.0.0.1 with the japanese language pack installed as viewable at:
tools->add-ons->languages->Japanese Language Pack 2.0.0.1
however, websites with japanese text (chinese characters) are not displaying as expected. instead of the kanji (chinese characters), there are small boxes with 4 small characters inside towards each corner.
i attempted to 'reinstall' the JLP by visiting the following site and selecting 'install':
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3846
checking, i see this included at:
firefox->tools->add-ons->extensions->JLP kit 0.2.8.1.
firefox was restarted. however, the japanese (chinese) characters are displaying as boxes as before.
before we upgraded to fc5/2.0.0.1, we had fc2 with firefox 1.5.0.3, which appears to load the above urls as expected (interestingly enough, not in the title bar of the browser window, however, as in the amazon page's case).
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. start up firefox 2.0.0.1 on linux fc5 2.6.18
2. note that the extensions list include JLP 2.0.0.1/install JLP 0.2.8.1 from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3846
3. visit sample urls:
http://www.amazon.co.jp/, http://www.nikkei.co.jp/
and note the little boxes with numbers and letters inside them, instead of the chinese characters for japanese kanji.
Actual Results:
instead of the kanji (chinese characters), there are small boxes with 4 small numbers and letters inside towards each corner.
Expected Results:
japanese kanji (chinese characters) as displayed previously on fc2 with firefox 1.5.0.3.
RELATED BUG?
appears to be similar to a windows user's experience:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=367496
although in our case it is on linux fc5 machines.

The language pack doesn't include any fonts, it just uses has japanese strings for the Firefox user interface (menus, dialogs etc), japanese search plugins, and so on.
You should ask your distro about how to add the fonts you need.

ah, my mistake -- a premature 'bug' post. my apologies for wasting your time.
i've yum-installed the fonts-japanese rpm package, and that appears to have resolved the problem.
