My wife opened her address book (Mozilla) and it was gone and mine (with my addresses) was in its' place! Her addresses were gone, wiped out. In my mailbox, my address book and addresses were unaffected. So now we have duplicate sets of addresses. What happened to hers' we don't know.

This sounds very much like you're either using the same profile within Thunderbird or your wife opened your profile by mistake.
Is it possible that her contact list still exists someplace? It's like her's disappeared and was replaced with mine. Until this happened she had her contact list and I had mine. It's like her's was wiped out. That is, when I go into my mailbox or profile, I see the same contact list that she does when she goes into her profile. How do we get back to having two separate contact lists?

Ron, does this issue still occur in the latest supported 2.0.0.14 / trunk nightlies?

There's been no further response to this. My only thought would be that maybe switch profiles didn't work or something, but without more information its hard to tell. Resolving incomplete (Ron, please feel free to reopen, if you can reproduce it and give us more detail).
