I've seen the same thing with the Adobe Flash plugin; been meaning to investigate what's going on. I bet the plugins need to request elevated permissions (or, we need to do that on their behalf). Ria; you aware of any Vista-specific Flash installation bugs? I think there might be a DUP of this, but if not I'll come back and confirm it (or someone else can, in the meantime).

Bug 352762? I don't have Vista at the moment so I can't test it.

No luck; I still see this with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9a8pre) Gecko/2007082805 Minefield/3.0a8pre, even after adding "java.com" to the whitelist, clicking "Allow" and then attempting an install. (It even still fails after explicitly adding "java.sun.com" to the whitelist, which is from where the XPI is actually attempted to download.

Changing summary from: "cannot download java update" to "Can't install Java 6u2 JRE XPI on Windows Vista; -203 error". On XP SP 2, Java installs itself to C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02 (with a \bin and a \lib directory). This is probably due to XPInstall (since this is an XPI) not elevating on Vista.
Summary: cannot download java update → Can't install Java 6u2 JRE XPI on Windows Vista; -203 error

This bug is not about PFS, right? xpinstall install.js-style installation is broken in vista and will not be fixed. They should use an .exe installer which requests elevated privileges.
(In reply to comment #11) > This bug is not about PFS, right? xpinstall install.js-style installation is > broken in vista and will not be fixed. They should use an .exe installer which > requests elevated privileges. Right, this is XPI-only; I've got additional bugs logged for the PFS case. Should we relnote that "install.js-style installation is broken in Vista and will not be fixed"?

Yes... I was pretty sure this had been relnoted since FF2002, though.

Somebody needs to contact Sun and ask them to put up .exe installers instead of .xpis for Firefox. Should this bug be moved to some evangelism component?

I verifeid that this is working now. Looks like the java plugin has an update 6u5, and installs as a .exe file. Use the URL above to confirm and install. Verified on Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9pre) Gecko/2008040805 Minefield/3.0pre
