There is no possibility to edit a mail template directly.

I want to modify only one email adress from an email template, without changeing the From-Adress (Account) or changing the signature (that is the text which is attached to bottom of the mail below the "--").

There is a workaround with "Edit message as new" and saving to the drafts folder and moving it back, but this is much complicated and has the disadvantage when opening, the From-Adress (Account) is automatically changed to another account and the signature overwritten with the signature from this account, which is very ugly as I don't want to change it.
And this is very ugly for me, as I have to edit many email templates so that I need the possibility to do that very efficiently.

I would like to have an editing facility which just opens the message and leaves it unchanged and when you save it back you can choose to overwrite the old message template or to save it as new message template.
Thus you can just edit something like adding/removing/editing some email-addresses and leaving the rest of the template message unchanged.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Want to edit a template from one account (for me it is the second accound from top of the mail-window). You will have to try the workaround "Edit as new".
2.Just edit some email-addresses as somebody's email address has changed.
3.Check,if the rest remains unchanged, including the mail signature and the from-account from the original
4.After using the workaround you have an old mail and the edited new mail so that you have to delete the old one and put the new one from the drafts-folder in place of it.
Actual Results:
After trying this with many templates you will be fed up... :-(

Expected Results:
There should be a Edit-template function which lets you edit the template directly and lets you save it back (overwrites the old template) or to save it as new template.
An edit template button could be very confusing IMO, and I'm not sure I get what your after here.

If it's a template (in the template folder), and you want to change it - double click to edit, do the modifications and do Save As > Template. Then delete the old template if you don't need it anymore.
this is more correctly an ENH request.
might a dupe but I didn't check

Suite bug 80280.

Summary: Edit templates function missing → want Edit templates button (like drafts)
Assignee: mscott → nobody
I just noticed that if you compose a message, press "Save as Draft", then switch to the Draft folder (without closing the message), and press "Edit Draft", Thunderbird opens *another* copy of that message. This should not happen; neither with Drafts nor with Templates. It should bring the already open Draft/Template to the foreground. 0.02 €
