380309 - MDC wiki external redirects aren't redirecting automatically

Since the upgrade, it's been discovered that redirect pages aren't redirecting automatically.  They simply come up with a link you can click to continue off-site.  I spent some time looking into this but can't find any reason for it yet.  I'm hoping that it's just a configuration issue in LocalSettings.php.

It doesn't look like this is possible with the current version of mediawiki.  I tried doing the exact same thing on wikipedia.org and it would not let me.

It looks like Wikipedia is using a newer version than we are (1.1 alpha vs. 1.9.3), but it certainly does work there: see e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESP_Louis_Riel and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESP_Louis_Riel?redirect=no .

Um, no. I don't think external redirects ever worked or will work on wikipedia. It was a custom cusstomization we had on our wiki that was used to get external pages appear in category listing.

I'm not fond of these redirect pages given how hard they are to edit and how awful category listing pages generally are, but if we're shooting for feature parity with the old MDC, this ought to be fixed.

Turns out we have a patch for MediaWiki to make this happen; gandalf has updated it but hasn't filed a ticket yet to have it applied.

well, Dria asked me, I wrote it, it worked... I'm not sure why during the update noone diffed our mediawiki against original to catch modifications...
