On my Windows XP computer with an AMD Athlon 2000+ processor and 512 MB RAM I can't use Firefox anymore how it is now, unless I avoid using basic everyday features like opening the history sidebar "By Last Visited", searching in "By Last Visited" and surfing with the search window open after a search.

When I open the history sidebar "By Last Visited" the CPU goes immediately to 100%, leaving Firefox unresponsive for at least a full minute. I have no choice but waiting until it is ready, for trying to stop it by closing the sidebar makes the hang only worse.

Then, when I'm stupid enough to do a search after that, it will again take over a minute before I see the first results.

When I forget to close the sidebar and go to GMail, Firefox hangs forever.

I'm talking here about a history from only 60 days.

I copied the same profile files to another computer with an Intel Duo Core processor and 2048 MB RAM memory, and there I see no problems. The same history sidebar opens in less than 3 seconds, also the search results display within a few seconds and opening GMail causes no hang.

These are regressions, caused by Places, that seemingly can't get along with certain hardware. I have no problem at all with branch builds or pre-Places builds.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
