User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3 Before 2.0.0.3, the installer on windows was weak but functional. With 2.0.0.3 it took a nosedive -- it was very dumb, and kept trying to install 2.0.0.3 over and over from every account (even limited ones which could never install), even after 2.0.0.3 was installed. Now I am getting attempts to update to 2.0.0.4 over and over, failing every time of course (from a limited user account) -- even with my advanced options set to not automatically install!! I remember there is some horrible hack to fix this. I have to log in as every user one at a time, and track down and delete some nasty stuff in some auto-update directory buried way down inside the documents directory -- but I cannot find it. I looked in documents and settings\username\application data\mozilla etc and I looked in documents and settings\username\local application data\mozilla etc If every install is going to fail for every user over and over, could you put some info message into the failure message pointing to a web page about how to do the horrible hack to fix it? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Do you get an error message from the Installer ? Can you post the error message here ? Do you try to update via the Software Update (Help-> check for updates) or via the installer ?
Version: unspecified → 2.0 Branch
Could be a dupe of bug 340535. If you have Skype or a Logitech WebCam installed fully quit these programs before attempting to update. Or bug 303595 if you are running a limited user account.
I am experiencing the same program in both my 2 using account with my Windows XP. It used to be okay but when I updated to newest version, it says partial upgrade failed. It downloads and installs over and over. Terrible.
I also get attempts to install w.0.0.4 even though already installed. If I allow the installer to continue, the file is downloaded and then I get an installation failed message.
dennis, charlie, it would be great if you could provide more information. - Do you get a error message during the update on start (if so, could you post the error message) - Do you want to install Firefox as normal User or as Admin user ?
Subject: Re: [Bug 382740] 2.0.0.4 keeps trying to install and failing (of course) One time I got a message that a partial update had failed and that the installer would do a full update, which I accepted. That update downloaded and was installed without problem, according to a message I received. However, I still get messages that a new version ( 2.0.0.4) is available and wanting to install it.
Almost every time I run Firefox (2.0.0.4), I get the update message saying a new version (2.0.0.4) is available. If I accept the download, I get a "partial download failed, Firefox will try a full download) This has been going on for quite some time. If I refuse the download, Firefox functions normally. I'm the only user on my computer, and am admin.
I have the same problem. I am using two accounts (one admin and one limited). The version I used previously was 2.0.0.3 and even then it tried to update itself under the limited account to 2.0.0.4. It completely downloaded the update to the newest version, and whenever I start the Firefox it starts to update the version to 2.0.0.4. Furthermore, I tried to bypass this problem, and opened the admin account, and let Firefox do the automatic update to change to the last version, and the Firefox still tries to update itself in the limited account. The whole update process starts in the limited account, and I get the error message that some files cannot be overwritten because of the limited access. The strange thing is that the automatic installer does not recognises the fact that the update already happened, albeit in using a different account.
what I did is to go back to 2.0.0.3 I searched the version to google and downloaded it. uninstalled 2.0.0.4 then install. I disabled update upon installation and made internet is off. opened 2.0.0.3 firefox and disable Update in options menu item. that's it. I won't upgrade unless 2.0.0.5 is out. goodluck guys!
With the recent update to 2.0.0.5, the problem has finally gone away on my system.
Actually I was unlucky with the whole process. I updated from the admin user to 2.0.0.4 after I discovered this glitch, but it did not help the limited access user. Then I did something, and it was finally gone from the limited access user as well, so it did not try to update anything. The only unfortunate thing is that I also lost all my Bookmarks and everything which was connected earlier through Mozilla. Now I have the same problem with 2.0.0.5 as it still tries to update itself in the limited user.
Over to Software Update since "advanced options set to not automatically install!" implies this.
Component: Installer → Software Update
QA Contact: installer → software.update
Summary: 2.0.0.4 keeps trying to install and failing (of course) → 2.0.0.4 keeps trying to update and failing (of course)
Product: Firefox → Toolkit
John, have you seen this lately? I know there was an edgecase bug that would have caused this in 2.0.0.3 that has since been fixed so this is likely fixed.
