(Keywords: hang, regression, Whiteboard: [regression 1.5 > 2.0])

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; es-ES; rv:1.8.0.11) Gecko/20070312 Firefox/1.5.0.11
Build Identifier: versión 2.0.0.0 (20070326)

Thunderbird becomes unusable some minutes after it is started.
I use TB to access two IMAP(ever SSL) mailboxes, each in one window. I've had no problems for years, but TB 2.0 consistently hangs.
I have disconnected spam detection and spell checking for composing, as directed in some other bugs, to no avail.

I have also tried to use just one IMAP connection.

When TB seems hung, it is consuming most CPU and has over 227M virtual size, as shown in top:
PID COMMAND %CPU TIME #TH #PRTS #MREGS RPRVT RSHRD RSIZE VSIZE
 1780 top 12.9% 0:15.88 1 18 22 656K 504K 1.07M 27.0M
 1777 thunderbir 72.8% 4:20.10 7 91 429 39.5M 38.1M 58.5M 227M

System load gets close to 2.

There is still some network traffic, as tcpdump shows packets in the IMAP connection, nut the user interface is tollay unresponsive, TB even does not get the focus when clicked.

The state persists over a system suspend.

System is Mac OS 10.4.9 on PowerBook G4.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start Thundebird 2.0
2.Connect to server
3.Wait some minutes

Actual Results:
TB UI becomes unresponsive.
MacOS rotating rainbow circle cursor apears over TB.
System load goes high.
TB consumes system resources as if there is no tomorrow.

Expected Results:
Thunderbird used as email client, getting new messages, reading messages, and composing new ones.

Using default theme.
Workaround:
Keep TB offline, and download messages as needed, manage them (answer, archive, delete, ...), go online, download more, repeat.
This workaround keeps TB from presenting the reported behaviour.
Version: unspecified → 2.0
Do you see this also if you start with a new, clean profile? (Use profile manager to create a new profile - leave the old profile for you to go back to)

If that works, go back to original profile and narrow down the problem using http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Thunderbird

If you have filters or junk mail processing turned on, what happens if you turn them off?

[I don't see any relevant bugs in progress so I wouldn't bother updating your nightly build, especially if you have a stable one]
Keywords: hang
Summary: Thunderbird irresponsive after some use, consumes system resources → Thunderbird unresponsive after short time, consumes system resources
Victoriano writes "recently disappeared after I implemented message
filtering in the servers using sieve and disconnected my message filters
in TB. ... [will test latest release] Now that I have an idea of the possible cause".

Victoriano, see if you can narrow the hang to a specific filter and/or message. Leaving bug open for Victoriano's results.
