User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20061201 Firefox/2.0.0.4 (Ubuntu-feisty) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20061201 Firefox/2.0.0.4 (Ubuntu-feisty) I use Gmail constantly. If Y use the chat enabled version, I get freezes for 10, 30 seconds, or even a minute. Firefox goes all gray and the CPU monitor goes all the way up to 100%, Then everything is back to normal , but It doesn't last , and the problem goes up again. It all goes away if I chose to use gmail without chat, and comes back if I get the chat enabled version. Having google talk open in a popup windows does not produced the problem. The situation is new: no more than two weeks and I think it goes back to the last time Firefox auto-udpated. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.log onto gmail with chat enabled 2.open a mail 3.click on answer and start typing a few words : freeze Actual Results: Firefox goes gray (but not always) and the cpu jumps to 100%
Does the same thing happen if you make a new firefox profile? - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_manager (Don't delete your existing profile!)

Did a new profile from scratch. Problem disappeared. Came back when I put my faforite extensions on line. I'm going to pinpoint the culprit and report back in a few days. Thanks Steve.

Back already: I identified beyond doubt the module causing the freezes: Image zoom. http://imagezoom.yellowgorilla.net/ It only causes a problem if it is set to autofit the images after load. Strange though that it does this on a page like gmail where pics are not really that big. Something that could lead to an explanation: I noticed (after I dit set image zoom to autofit the pictures to screen), that the small status circle (red green orange...) in front of each chat correspondent name was shrunk. Probably related (especially as the problem doesn't occur if gmail is set to "without chat". I'm going to report this to the author, see if he has a solution. Bye !
