User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; InfoPath.1; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30) Build Identifier: Thunderbird 2.0.0.4 I was prompted by the Thunderbird updater to install the 2.0.0.4 update. The installer closed Thunderbird and attempted to restart it. Upon restarting Thunderbird, an error message 'some files cannot be updated' appears. Clicking OK to this message causes the update process to restart and the same message to be produced; the updater seems to get stuck in a loop. After a reboot, Thunderbird fails to start when launched: the title bar appears but the window beneath it is completely blank. Starting Thunderbird in Safe mode produces the same result. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. When prompted 'Thunderbird 2.0.0.4 update is ready to install' click OK 2. Erm... 3. That's it! Expected Results: Presumably the update is supposed to 'just work'. I've never had any problem with any other automatic update to Thunderbird either on the machine in question or on any other. Windows XP Professional SP2B fully patched Athlon 2GHz/512Mb Thunderbird 2.0.0.4 default theme

Edmund, do you try to update Thunderbird as administrator user, or as user with limited rights ?
I'm an administrator user. Some additional info: I've just looked at Thunderbird's install.log and the recent install attempt isn't mentioned. I guess the installer didn't reach the stage of actually writing to the log file.
From your bugreport i think you used the Software Update to get Thunderbird 2.0.0.4, then is this not covered by the install.log, see below how to see the last-update.log Could you attach the last-update log to this bug ? it should be in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\updates\last-update.log If you have logitech or any other software that could use the mail client, can you check if this software is closes (taskmanager)
I don't have a last-update.log or even an \updates folder in \Mozilla Thunderbird. I have install.log, cleanup.log, install_wizard1.log and uninstall.log. None of them mention the recent update attempt.
I've just rebooted in Safe Mode and the problem is still there. So I doubt it's a conflict with another process. When I start Thunderbird, Task Manager reports that thunderbird.exe is running, and a very small window appears in the top left corner of the screen. However, if I maximise the window, it is blank, with just the window bar and resize buttons at the top, and white space underneath.
Likely dupe of bug 340535.
Reading through the comments of bug 340535 I think this is probably the same. I'm marking this as a duplicate.
