This bug is an extension of bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=384628.

Even though Firefox on the Mac doesn't recognize a jnlp file, it does offer the user the chance to supply a program to open the file and here I can manually choose the Java Web Start program. However, the page I'm accessing this file from (through hardware with a web server, not an online site), is secured with https and in order for Java Web Start to work it apparently needs the security context associated with the session to launch properly but is not getting it. So the Java Web Start program gives the error

unable to find valid certification path

This works completely fine under the Windows version of Firefox.
