Description

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20070515 Firefox/2.0.0.4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20070515 Firefox/2.0.0.4

One clearly repeatable symptom of what is otherwise a periodic hang with FireFox 2. Was not an issue with FF1.5 previously, has been regularly happening with 2.0.0.4 after the upgrade.

Situation: Open Tools>Options dialog, click on Advanced category and then try to change tabs among those offered: [General | Network | Update | Encryption]. At each click/tab change, experience hang [freeze|delay|pause] of 6 seconds (one-onethousand, two-onethousand... six-onethousand) before the tab focus changes. Running Process Explorer, see CPU go from 0-4% to 100% at each tab change for that same period. Happens nowhere else in Options dialogs - eg: can change categories [Main | Tabs | Content...] readily with no delay, and no blip in CPU usage.

I am also experiencing periodic hangs [freezes|delays|pauses] when browsing web pages (like on this one) that affects typing, clicking on links, etc. However, I have not been able to figure out a pattern for that behavior -- but the above is 100% repeatable.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Tools>Options>Advanced
2. Change tab focus among [General | Network | Update | Encryption]

Actual Results:
Experience 6 second delay while CPU usage goes to 100% and then drops

Expected Results:
Minor to no delay and little impact to CPU usage while working in preferences

I can supply a flash movie of the preferences situation if that would be helpful. I have tried running in safe mode for the general browsing freeze (no difference) but cannot remember whether I tried the prefs issue while in safe mode. Will do that and post a follow-up.

BTW: Bug category reads "Preferences" but FF2 now calls that dialog "Options"?

Have posted flash movie of options tab issue to http://www.veino.com/firefox_bug/firefox_options_hang.swf

File is password protected to control bandwidth use and may be deleted in the future with no activity on the bug or after bug resolution.

Access user ID is firefox, password is f1ref0x (note the number 1 and number 0).
I can't reproduce this with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20070515 Firefox/2.0.0.4
Maybe caused by an extension or corrupt profile? Please retest in safe-mode or with a new profile to find this out.

As mentioned above, I have already retested in safe mode and the behavior was the same. I will try a new profile and report back here.

Sorry for the delay -- the behavior is the same with a new profile. I guess the next suggestion is going to be disabling any extensions? I'll try that at my next oppty.

Apologies again for the delay between posts. I have tried all of the approaches above - new profile and safe mode. I even went so far as to uninstall FF completely and deleted all files and folders associated with all Mozilla products and then tried a clean install (which prompted me for the settings import, etc. upon start up, so it truly appeared to be clean).

Sadly, the exact same situation results (the delay now appears to be a little shorter, say ~4 seconds between clicking an option tab and the dialog displaying.

Needless to say, I'm totally stumped.

Don V, do you see this problem with current beta of 3.1 or v3.0.x?

The other aspect of this bug (random pauses) made the system totally unworkable for me in regular use. This proved to be the final shove "pushing me out the Window" to Linux. I no longer have the environment that displayed the bug so cannot provide the answer to your 3.x question.

=> incomplete then, since it's WFM on vista and XP. Don, thanks for the response.
