User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20070515 Firefox/2.0.0.4
Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.4 (20070604) w/Penelope .1a19
With Penelope set to one-panel mode; closing all windows then opening w/ a new main index window gets a blank screen.
[one-panel may be an imprecise term, but I'm locked out of Penelope options at present...]
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have various windows open
2. Close all window w/splat-W or menu; leave T-Bird/Penelope running.
3. Open new mailbox index menu with splat-1 or menu.
Actual Results:
I get a blank 2-panel mailbox index window.
[Screen dump available on request..]
Expected Results:
I should get a filled one-panel message index window.
If instead of splat-1; I click on the Dock icom, I get the correct filled menu.

If you quit and restart Thunderbird does the problem go away?
Unfortunately I am unable to reproduce the problem as pressing command-1 or selecting mailboxes from the menu does not open ANY window for me (which sounds like another bug).....
Matt
>If you quit and restart Thunderbird does the problem go away?
Well, since T-Bird starts with a Mailbox index window by default; yes.
But I can duplicate by closing all again...
More weirdness:
1) Close all windows with splat-W's or red-X.
2) splat-1 to get {defective} Mailboxes Index window [or menu]
3) splat-W does NOT close that window; red-X will.
>does not open ANY window for me
I concur, I can't open an initial specific mailbox window.
But if I open the Address Book window first;
or
a {defective} Mailbox index window;
then subsequent windows open correctly.
Note:
UI style [2 vs 3] in Preference makes no difference....
make that:
2) splat-1 [or menu] to get {defective} Mailboxes Index window

Ahh, NOW I can make it happen.....
Steps to reproduce:
- Launch Penelope (A standard mailbox viewer should open)
- Open the Address Book
- Leaving the Address Book open, close the message viewer
- Press Command|Control-1 to open the message viewer
- Message viewer is blank. No mailboxes listed, no messages displayed.
The key for me is opening the Address Book first....

Hmm, I do not need to do that; so that adds to the mystery.

I've just confirmed that this is still occurring in 8.0.0.b4.
Note this is mutually exclusive to 463457; i.e. this occurs only with the Penelope extension; 463457 without. But both are blank-screen type bugs.
Blocks: 463457
A new bad behaviour.
Open windows, including a message.
Close all the other windows, leaving just the message.
Window->Mail & Newsgroups opens a blank main window AND a duplicate of the message. (Splat-1 does nothing...)
A possible desirable enhancement:
How about a splat-0 shortcut that brings the existing Mailboxes window to the forefront?

This (these) bug(s) still exist(s) at 8.0b7.
Items #2 & #3 in David's comment #3 still occur (item 2 is ignores "Preferences" setting).
I can also corroborate David's observation that it is not necessary to open the Address Book first in order for Command-1 to open the "blank" window, as well as his observation that clicking on the Dock icon DOES display the correct window.
I cannot reproduce the problem noted in David's comment #8; while "Window->Mail & Newsgroups" still opens the blank window, Command-1 DOES work, and there's no duplicate of the message window.
A suggested enhancement would be to have a "Mailbox" menu item that works WITHOUT having to have any (or a "main") windows open, to allow you to open selected mailboxes and not have the "clutter" of the "Mailboxes" window.
While playing around with this, I note that the "Mailbox" menu does not include "Outbox", although I'll report that as a separate bug once I've played around with creating/deleting additional mailboxes,
Lastly, how does one help out with Penelope/Eudora ? Where's the "open-source" source, so one might take a stab at finding/fixing bugs ? How about a link on the "Penelope - MozillaWiki" (https://wiki.mozilla.org/penelope) page to that information, or some information on the page itself ? Alternately, if someone can email me links/information, I'd be grateful.

That link accidentally got removed in some recent edits. I've added it back now. The direct link to the page for help on building Penelope is here: <https://wiki.mozilla.org/Penelope_Developer_Page>.

Thanks, Jeff. Now I just need to "clone" the right repositories and subscribe to a few mailing lists....

I occasionally get a very similar problem with the main Inbox (Exchange 2008 via IMAP); after receiving new mail, the pane sometimes goes completely blank. Closing and reopening it restores the list. I'm not sure, but it may happen to other mail subfolders too.

Penelope didn't see any activity in the vcs for the last 8 years, closing.
