Build ID: Today's trunk, Windows XP Summary: Trying to send without an SMTP account spins meteors indefinitely/fails to alert. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Create a newsgroup account in Thunderbird 2. Click "Write" 3. Fill out a valid email address and click send Expected Results: We should prompt for the user to create an email account (and thus, an SMTP server) Actual Results: We spin indefinitely, and the message never gets sent.

Phenomenon of Bug 123062 looks to be worse than before. > 123062 – If only account is news, trying to send e-mail results in "can't find smtp server" See also Bug 165348. > 165348 – Improve error message dialog when no SMTP server defined and you try to send to a mail recipient via news What version or nightly build id? "spin" is trunk only issue?
This bug occurs in both 2.0.0.5 and 2.0.0.6 (and maybe 2.0.0.4?)
I set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=SMTP:5 and NSPR_LOG_FILE=C:\mozilla.txt, and tried the scenario as field. mozilla.txt was 0 bytes, demonstrating that we didn't hit SMTP. I then tried it again, this time with NSPR_LOG_MODULES=NNTP:5, and I'll attach that logfile, though I don't think it'll really help David troubleshoot.
(In reply to comment #2) > This bug occurs in both 2.0.0.5 and 2.0.0.6 (and maybe 2.0.0.4?) I could re-create problem(Thunderbird 2.0.0.5, MS Win-XP). But there is no problem in news posting. Are there many news server access only users(no POP3 nor IMAP) who want to write&send mail? Severity=enhancement? Or minor? 1. Create a new profile 2. Define a news account (news.mozilla.org), with dummy mail address 2-1. "Local Folders" (account1, default account at this stage) : No identity, then no "Outgoing Server(SMTP)" 2-2. news.mozilla.org (account2) : "Outgoing Server(SMTP)" of main identity = "Use Default Server" 2-3. No SMTP server is defined 3. Compose a mail, then Send => Spin, send never finish. (Identity for "Local Folders" is probably being searched infinitely) But "Cancel" works, and user can define a POP3/IMAP account(then a SMTP) 4. Subscribe mozilla.test 5. Post a news article, Reply to a news article => Both sre posted with no error to news.mozilla.org => Saved in Sent of "Local Folders", according to default set in identity

TCW, can you reproduce this?

I don't NNTP service any more so I can't test.

But in the STR we have: "1. Create a newsgroup account in Thunderbird", then some steps, and then the "expected results" it says "We should prompt for the user to create an email account (and thus, an SMTP server)"

NNTP and SMTP are getting mixed up together? This doesn't even make sense. NNTP, I would think, would NOT prompt to create anything but NNTP account info. If you're creating an email account, it should prompt for email account info.

Based on what I did in bug 97375, it is a resound no. No spinner animation. WFM.

Thanks. You're the best.
