Currently you can view newsgroups as dotted names or as abbreviated dotted names.
I would like the option of a tree view of newsgroups, e.g.
news
> alt
> humor
> best-of-usenet (2)
> rec
> humor
> funny (1)
> reruns (1)
news.mozilla.org
> netscape
> public
> mozilla
java (16)
ui (8671)
win32 (3)
After all, mail folders are organized in a tree...

reassigning to nobody@mozilla.org and cc'ing sspitzer. If someone wanted a pref
that did this we would need the news backend to have a folder structure as shown
in the tree below.

news backend to have folder structure? What I wanted was for the newsgroup tree
to show in folder view like the subscribe dialog does.

neil, scott was just describing what we'd need to do in the back end to get
this to work.
interesting rfe, I wish I had the time to work on it. I bet it would expose
certain assumtions I've made, since currently all newsgroups are always direct
children of the server.
note, something like a tree view for news would be needed if we ever support
news categories, but instead of using newsgroup names to determine parent->child
relationships, we'd use group->category.

As discussed on n.p.m.wishlist, suggest collapsing items with
only one child. So, for example:
alt.
drinks.kool-aid
lang.basic.compiler
test.clienttest2
gnu.emacs.
gnus
help
netscape.public.mozilla.wishlist
rec.
arts.
int-fiction
puppetry
games.diplomacy
I agree that this is not urgent.
Allowing the user to re-order the subscribed groups
arbitrarily (a la Gnus) would substantially complicate
this RFE, and someone is bound to request that also
at some point.
