Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.5) Gecko/20070718 Fedora/2.0.0.5-1.fc7 Firefox/2.0.0.

I am used to pasting keyword searches with the middle mouse button or entering them in the URL bar.

In Firefox 2, middle mouse paste now fails with a "URL not valid" dialog.

The keyword: URL bar prefix also no longer works, making searches like foo.bar impossible. I am aware of the search bar, but it does not clear itself after my search loads.

Please, how can I restore the old behavior?

Reproducible: Always
Did you clear the location bar first? I tried some new and old Firefox versions but middle mouse pasting always fails to clear the selected location bar beforehand.
1. Open a new tab.
2. Visit any page (including about:blank).
3. Try to middle-mouse paste a phrase (as opposed to a URL) to do a keyword search.

The above works in FF1.5. In FF2, I get an error dialog every time. Middle-mouse paste into a brand new tab works in both.

The reference to the search bar is because searches entered do not clear themselves from the search bar and therefore are visible on screen indefinitely. I thought this significant because I found bug #331522 while checking if my problem had been solved, so if I understand correctly the above behavior was made the default for privacy reasons? If so, the search bar is a much bigger and more discoverable privacy problem.
Paul, probably the hidden preference called "middlemouse.paste" is set to false in your profile. Open "about:config" in the location bar and search for the above name. Set it to true and it should work. AFAIR there was a change between Fx1.5 and Fx2.0.
