1. button on menubar, for those not wanting Mode Toolbar.
2. combine 2 buttons into one toggle button, switching image appropriately for mode.

The request for the mode-buttons on the mail- and calendartoolbar is valid however...

Indeed, I'd prefer to be able to hide the mode toolbar (or for it to be somewhere other than in my cramped folder pane, perhaps in the today pane) and have these buttons in my main mail toolbar.
