with mail.pane_config.dynamic=3 (Tb2), Lightning opens the Calendar in the Thread Pane area, which is very wide and very short, leaving the Calendar compressed.  far more usable if it's opened in the Message Pane area.

You already filed this as Bug 337119 that points to Bug 215661 for the layout. From Bug 215661 Comment #23 I read that this layout was now removed from Thunderbird for the next release.
The cvs comment from mscott (Thunderbird lead developer) for the removal says: "remove an easter egg mail layout that we never properly supported". 
So if Thunderbird doesn't support the layout and removed it from Thunderbird there seems no need for Lightning to support this layout.

As Thunderbird will no longer have this option in the TB3 timeframe and our development resources are limited already, this bug is (unfortunately) WONTFIX.

when Tb3 rolls around, i'll be adding that layout code back via userchrome.js or replacing the whole module if necessary..

i understand though.  if someone could be so kind as to point me to the relevant lightning code, i'd like to see if i can't come up with a fix, as it's likely just checking that pref and choosing a different node to replace.  if i get it to work, i'll post it.
