Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.click on launch icon
2.seems busy for few seconds
3.
Actual Results:  
nothing launches.

Expected Results:  
firefox browser should have started. task manager does not show the process running.

I have searched an it seemed it might be a firewall block. I did the unblock procedure through control pannel->security->allow a program through windows firewall->exceptions. it did not work.
This problem started after I downloaded the latest version of firefox

Vista Home premium as well...in use for approx 6 weeks.

Fresh Firefox 2.0.9 D/L today...

All past versions uninstalled before new install...registry cleaned as well.

Reproducible: Always 

Last two weeks multiple locks and crashes...

Now Firefox shows running in Taskmanager...nothing displays...huge CPU load showing...50+%

Authorized through Vista firewall...

MSFT conspiracy? ;>)

any hope with SP1???

VISTA won't play nice with Firefox!

I have occasionally gotten this error with Firefox... normally, when I go to task manager, killed firefox.exe, and restarted the application, it works fine after.  Not sure if this is the same issue you're getting, though.  Perhaps you could try poking around and seeing what it's doing with a debug tool?

Same BS: Firefox 3.01 doesn't start up, immediately the crashmanager says that there is a problem.
System AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2 GHz
