this is in follow up to bug 389898 comment 18 20070810 build hangs after retry of failed send message and mail server was down - sort of. I learned later that the server was up, but was not accepting AUTHENTICATED requests. thunderbird smtp set to TLS. thunderbird v2 did not hang. did not test other trunk builds, so can't say what this regressed from.

Version 91 has all new smtp backend code. If you can still reproduce this issue, please file a new bug report https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=MailNews%20Core&component=Networking%3A%20SMTP
