Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9a8pre) Gecko/2007081818 Minefield/3.0a8pre Summary: Show titletips for cropped text in Plugin window. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open Tools | Add-ons 2. Scroll down to the Quicktime Plugin entry 3. Hover the mouse over its entry (noting it has an ellipsis) Expected Results: We should display a titletip whenever there's an ellipsis present, since that indicated cropped text Actual Results: No titletip appears; the user must resize the window to read the text
Left out a step between 1 + 2: "Click on the Plugins" graphic.
Are you referring to the description text? Isn't the same true for all views (e.g. extensions, themes, and locales)? What should the behavior be when no ellipsis is displayed?
(In reply to comment #2) > Are you referring to the description text? Sorry, yes. > Isn't the same true for all views (e.g. extensions, themes, and locales)? It should be; we can morph this bug if they're all implemented the same way. > What should the behavior be when no ellipsis is displayed? That's something for the UX/UI team to spec out. I wonder if this has accessibility implications?
I personally prefer not to display popup information unless it is the only way to display additional information. The current behavior has been around for quite some time in the other views and doing this just for the plugins view would create inconsistent behavior between the other views and the plugins view which I would not be ok with so I am changing this to severity enhancement and changing the summary to reflect this as well. I personally think this is wontfix due to the information in question is IMO seldom read by users (e.g. once or twice during the lifespan of an add-on being installed, the information is already readily available by selecting the add-on, displaying popup information obscures viewing information below the popup, and even though this request is not negated by the fact that no one has ever asked for this previously it does suggest that it isn't something most people expect from the ui.

Summary: Show titletips for cropped text in Plugin window. → Show titletips for cropped description text in the add-ons manager.
I only bring up the point for consistency; I agree with all of your above points (I came from a threaded-view mail application world, which has truncated subject lines galore; the quickest and perhaps most visible parallel within Firefox is the Bookmarks Manager window, but click-to-select there only makes a selection; it doesn't expand the description, so that's not quite the same thing.)
Product: Firefox → Toolkit
We now have the details pane for each type of add-on, which shows the description as full text. IMO we do not longer need a tooltip of the description. Dave or Jennifer, what do you think?

Yeah I think with the direct "More" link immediately after the cropped description we no longer need this.
