You didn't get the prompt about new version, the time before you started it up and it installed?
Nope, I just started it up and before I knew it , it had installed the new version -- even though I have my computer set to ASK first.

I'm not sure how we could go about putting together a test case based on this... I update Thunderbird on multiple computers regularly, and haven't ever come across this problem.
Is it possible that someone else was at your computer and clicked the install button in a previous session?
I usually use the "Install Later" button when I update, so there's often a long gap between when the update downloads and when it actually installs, in my case, so I'm wondering if it might be the same thing here.

Sorry, yes I'm sure it installed itself without asking me, and no one else ever uses my computer. The Install later button just puts it off. It still has to "ask" before installing. But it didn't.
