when connection to the site hosting the mar times out, software update reports "Failed (unknown reason)"

this morning, http access to ftp.mozilla.org was disabled (see bug #393462).

when attempting to the mar directly in the browser, I got a nice error message.  see screen shot #1.

but during that time, I did a check for updates and I got "Failed (unknown reason)".  see screen shot #2 of the error console.  I failed to get a screen shot of the sofware update UI, but I can reproduce it with another server.

this is something we could handle better in the software update UI.

we have a string for this (http://lxr.mozilla.org/seamonkey/source/toolkit/locales/en-US/chrome/mozapps/update/updates.properties#68)

but note, from the error console, we're getting a *49 and not a *62

That UI is no longer used and instead a generic message is displayed and the update is retried later.
