There was a bug where the type-to-select feature in mailbox windows was causing command + key shortcuts to not be recognized. This was fixed in Eudora 8 beta 4/Penelope 0.5a1. Command + M being mapped to Minimize instead of Check Mail is a different issues, and is tracked in bug 382826.
