Of course the urls weren't active in the compose window. This was nice because you could see the message exactly as the user would see it upon receipt. Seems like it should be fairly simple. As it is now, if you save the message as a draft then open the message from the drafts folder, URLs will be highlighted, so it is probably just a matter of turning on that URL scanner while composing...

I would also add that cE not only recognized URL's that were typed, but also ones that were simply pasted in. This functionality should be supported in E8, as well.
