Keyboard input is blocked, frozen up, and not-buffered, during the auto-save to my IMAP server -- during the time that the candybar status animates all the characters I type are lost.

Ideally the auto-save would take a snapshot of the email instantly, without blocking keyboard input, and save it in the background -- perhaps with the candybar display at the same time.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Drafts folder is an IMAP account (in Account settings).
2. "Automatically save the message" is set in Preferences->Mail->Composition
3. Type a letter and don't stop typing for the number of minutes set in #2 + 1

* In the equivalent Thunderbird bug I referenced, some claim a fraction of a second delay when saving, but mine takes several seconds to connect and save to the IMAP server -- text is lost during the time.
** It may be possible to attach a file to the email in order to increase the auto-save time for easier reproduction of this problem.
Actual Results:  
Keyboard input is lost, not entering the editor, until the save is done.

Expected Results:  
Auto-save should be done in the background, not interrupting the email composition process.

I see a small delay with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a8pre) Gecko/2007091321 SeaMonkey/2.0a1pre but no input is lost.

We would have to test, if the patch from bug 323351 helps.

Perhaps it was too late yesterday for proper bug triaging. The patch was already ported in bug 352310 -> DUPE
