We should ship an example plugin that has example hook code, and is disabled by default. This would particularly help people with some of the more complicated hooks.

The idea of making quips a plugin seems like a good option. It is something people are already familiar with and would remove one more parameter. It would also be a simple example that would include all the major parts (template hook, database hoot, code hook)

Oh, I'm also going to actually ship a plugin called "example" that's disabled by default. It'll have examples in every area. You can already see some of it in some patches I've asked for review on.
