User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6 Build Identifier: 2.0.0.6 (20070728) For some reason, every once in a while I will notice a certain folder has thousands of messages in it even though I have the retention policy to delete any messages older than a couple of weeks. When I check the retention policy, I will discover that it now is set to "don't delete any messages." I will then change it back to what I had it as before, but at some unpredictable point in the future I will once again discover that my retention policy has been set back to the default. I think this is happening in multiple folders, but I will say the folder it seems to happen on the most is one that has a few subfolders in it, soap or perhaps somehow that has an effect. Unfortunately since it just seems to be something I discover occasionally I can't say that it happens at a particular time or due to a particular event; it just happens. I apologize for my lack of specificity. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Set retention policy to delete messages after a certain number of days. 2. Use Thunderbird normally. 3. Eventually notice that you have too many messages in a folder, check the retention policy and discover it has been reset to the default. Expected Results: Obviously, once you set the retention policy it should stay set until you change it manually.
I experienced this same problem with Thunderbird 2.0.0.6, with more disastrous consequences. I had manually set retention policies on IMAP folders to never delete any messages. At some point, this automatically reverted to the server default, which was to delete messages older than 30 days. Because of automatic compaction, I lost many important emails. There really needs to be a global setting for retention policy that allows for permanently ignoring server defaults. This issue also may be related to that of bug 356535.
Can't believe this is still broken. Deleting someones mail is never ok and should be a top priority to fix.

Charles, do you still see this problem in a newer version of 2.x? And did the problem also exist in 1.5? msridhar, Unyalliman, - the problem you describe is not this bug. so you will want to cc: to bug 356535

Sorry I took so long to reply, since some retentions had disappeared I had to reset them and then see if they held, and then I just forgot to report back. Anyway, the problem has disappeared as of version 2. Thanks.

Could you reopen this one? The behaviour described here is happening to me too, even if I am using 2.0.0.9 (Windows XP).
paul, at this point you would be wanting to use 2.0.0.21. Since reporter does not see the problem, if you still see this with newest v2 or v3 beta**, please open a new bug. ** http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/early_releases/ (backup your profile before using beta)
Paul, also see bug 356535 and bug 231541 comment 94. Based on that information, do you still see a problem?
I am sorry to say I have been forced to use Outlook since a couple of months (company policy) so I am not able to follow up anymore.
