Both "The Colbert Report" and "The Daily Show" have the same "university" audiences that other current Mozilla marketing efforts are trying to reach. It would be fun to see Mitchell Baker on "The Colbert Report" defending the Mozilla Foundation against Steven's inevitable accusations that it is a communist organization and that Firefox is a threat to American capitalism. Likewise, Jon Stewart could have much fun, most likely at Microsoft's expense, with the growing popularity of Mozilla's Firefox while Mitchell highlights the remarkable strides made by the open source software movement.
Oddly enough, I mentioned this to Mozilla Marketing (Pkim and John Slater) a few months ago and they said, "If you have a contact, go for it." So, I emailed and received the following response: -------------------------- From: Renata Hi Seth. I would suggest getting in touch with the talent booker for The Daily Show is Hillary Kun at 212-468-1700 and for The Colbert Report it's Emily Lazar at 212-649-6200. Thanks. -----Original Message----- From: Seth Bindernagel [mailto:sethb@mozilla.com] Sent: Monday, June 18, 2007 3:00 PM To: Albani, Steve; Luczak, Renata; Runyan, Jenni Subject: Mozilla's CEO as a guest on Jon Stewart or the Colbert Report Hi Steve, Renata, and Jenni, I work at Mozilla, which is the open source software organization responsible for creating the Internet browser Firefox. Not sure if you use Firefox or not, but we have had a very interesting history with our beginnings dating back to the first Netscape Navigator browser, which was codenamed Mozilla. Since then, our code base has been "open sourced" and the market share of Firefox has grown to roughly 15%. I'm not sure if you are the correct people to ask, but I wanted to inquire about how to suggest a guest for either the Daily Show or the Colbert Report. Our CEO, Mitchell Baker... -------------------------------- So, I called Emily Lazaar, and sent her this: -----Original Message----- From: Seth Bindernagel [mailto:sethb@mozilla.com] Sent: Monday, June 18, 2007 3:44 PM To: "emily lazar" <emily.lazar@thecolbertreport.org> Hi Emily, Thank you for your email address and I hope I did not interrupt you too badly from the phone call you were taking. It's not likely that the talent bookers know the history or significance of the Mozilla Foundation, Firefox or the open source movement in general. A little education might be necessary. Is there a press packet that can be sent, a dossier of reviews or press analyses of the impact that Mozilla and open source has had on the software market. Probably the more sensational the more effective. Plus some bold statements of purpose and goals might entice a response. Someone will have to "sell" Mitchell and the Mozilla story as a good fit for the show.
Maybe an email campaign could help, spurred on by a blogging blitz asking Mozilla supports to email the show asking for an interview. It would be best if such a campaign had clear instructions regarding the email's subject line and format. Provide a template that includes instructions on how to filter then emails using the most common email clients. Another idea is to set up a virtual petition, a website where people can post their enthusiastic support for both the shows and Mozilla. Just some ideas.
Firefox 3 is out and 3.1 is just around the corner, but I would like to morph this bug to target the launch of Firefox 4. Any objections? It would be cool to see Daily Show and Colbert Report theme for Firefox 4's release.
