I encounter problems with my ADRESS Book, that I did NOT experience however with the old version !

When I search adresses , through "CONTACTS", or "ADRESS" ,in my Adress Book, prior to sending mails :

-    after 4 or 5 mails sent, I receive no more reply from the Adress Book :
it remains "empty" !

-   in the same time : I can no longer register NEW adresses !

-    close all opebned windows of Mozilla Thunderbird
-    AND : re-open same !

Do you get them also in -safe-mode? (All add-ons/themes disabled)

If you do, first clear the error console, reproduce the problem and paste the errors you get into this bug report.

What do you mean by your "crashes"? What phenomena after what operations?
Please note that "crash" is usually used for "unexpected abnormal termination of software" in software engineering world.

If answer is Q1=A & Q2=Yes, possibly DUP of Bug 391263.

Please be patient, most of our work is currently done by volunteers and this can mean bugs are not progressed for a while.

Having looked at this report, please can you try the following:

1) Start up Thunderbird. Use it to the point where it starts failing (no more reply from address book)
2) Open up Tools -> Error Console. Select "Clear" on the Error Console.
3) Now try and interrogate the address book again.
4) If any errors appear on the Error Console whilst you are trying to get a response from the address book, please copy them and paste them into this bug.

One other question for the time being - are you using an LDAP address book?

Those crashes are all (or at least mostly) the same. But unfortunately not very helpful AFAIKT.

I don't know why you get this problem, but to workaround it you can *try* to use the export function and export the address book fields, and then delete the abook.mab from your profile <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder>. Then import the data again once you have an empty address book.

It seems to me that the bug appears most frequently when I use "TRANSFER"  (instead of " reply ")
in order to reply, or transfer, a mail  or a draft.

When the bug appears ( = when I try to find an adress) :
the wording "Name and adress" (in the "search" window )
appears in much lighter black colour than usual.

When the bug appears, ( = when I try to find an adress) : 
I can no longer type the beginning of the name of the consignee
on the line "for" (which is the usual way when there is no bug.

My  adress book contains abt 4500 mail adresses

When I  DIPATCH   a mail to numerous simultaneous consignees,  
the consignee list may contain maximum  abt 15 adresses,
otherwise there is a bug.
However, when I RECEIVE mails dispatched to numerous consignees, 
I see a list containing 50 (or even more) adresses.

Roth, please stop putting my name in the crash reports. And, people will respond with help when they have time, so extra comments are not needed.

Two things:
a) can you get a screen shot of the characters you described earlier and attach to this bug
b) let's pick up with comment 17 - please do the following:
1. export your address book - tools|export (ldif format might be easiest)
2. create a new profile 
   - open a command prompt in your thunderbird directory
   - start TB with thunderbird -P
   - create a new profile
   - start in that new profile
3. go to AB and import the file from step 1
4. create the mail accounts you need to work/test
5. can you recreate the crash?

most other people's crashes don't have useful comments. but TB43693818 has
"... recurring problem, ... I'm trying to click-in an existing email address. When I try to enter a few letters of the name to filter the list it crashes. Seems to especially dislike the letter "C" but others will cause it too."

roth's email address is dead, so we have lost our testcase. and we have no other open bugs citing gSearchInput 

however, there is still a rare crash report - only 2 in the last 9 months - two different people. but both crashes are strange.  So question is, is either stack related or helpful?
