User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en; rv:1.8.1.5) Gecko/20070718 Fedora/2.0.0.5-1.fc7 Epiphany/2.18 Firefox/2.0.0.5
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; cs-CZ; rv.1.8.1.6) Gecko/20071003

Originally it was our Red Hat bugzilla report (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=239348), but I can reproduce it very well with the above described Firefox on x86_64 (which is debug version to be firefox-2.0.0.6-12 from Fedora/Rawhide). However, I cannot reproduce it (firefox runs smoothly) with Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; cs-CZ; rv:1.8.1.5) Gecko/20070718 Fedora/2.0.0.5-1.fc7 Firefox/2.0.0.5

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.open a long thread on gmail, expand all
2.scroll down with mouse
3.
Actual Results:
scrolling is erratic and somehow slow when small colored name tags show in the corner of the screen (see screenshot in the downstream bugzilla, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=190911)

Expected Results:
scrolling should be smooth and as fast as anywhere else.
I can confirm that this is still a major problem with beta4.

My case was on ubuntu gutsy.

It renders gmail effectively unusable.

I guess this is on a relatively weak machine, but still other sites scroll perfectly well.
My machine is fast so this is less problem for me but it's still very noticeable on today's latest trunk build. It also effects the main message list pages (e.g. the inbox), not just threaded message views.

It scrolls quickly on windows but slowly on Linux.
Using Firefox 3 Beta 5 on openSUSE...

I have quite a fast machine, and I don't notice poor scrolling performance on long threads.

However, I have horrible performance just scrolling the inbox, showing just 50 messages at a time. If I click on the "Older Version" link, scrolling is just like any other site.
I think this has something to do with the Gmail chat object being visible on the page. Reason is, I see the same behavior as everyone else, but for me if the chat object is not on the visible screen, the scrolling speeds up.

I was in a 300 line chat today and while the chat object was on the screen, it was almost unusable. Once it had finally left the screen, scrolling sped up to usable but still slow. I've repeated this test 4 times now with the same result.

This machine is a 2.5 ghz dual core x86_64 with Fedora 8. Firefox is linux/i686 3.0 beta 5 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008032619 Firefox/3.0b5).

I intend to perform some other tests, I'll report back findings to this bug.

My problem with slow scrolling of the inbox persists even though I have chat turned off and no chats open.

Yeah I don't have any chats open and chat is turned off, but there is a still a chat/contacts object on the left side. For me if it is not on the screen, the scrolling speeds up a bit but it is still slow.

Clearing cache did not change anything, just tried that. Other open tab's contents don't appear to change the behavior either.
Fixed for me in RC1!
i am having the same problem with ubuntu 8.04 hardy, this is really bad as gmail is now most widely used browsers and scrolling makes it irritating.....and not only for gmail all sites those using more ajaxs and javascript scroll slow....
Do you still see this problem? ... Using current version of FF (3.0.4), or 3.1 beta - beta 1 at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.1b1/releasenotes/ ... or beta 2 available soon

If you no longer see the problem please close the bug.

Just tried the 3.5 beta 4 release and the problem still remains. I use a workaround to avoid the slow scroll using the Stylish addon and overriding the style of elements with the "fixed" css property. I also attach a image of the problematic element to help clarify.
The element showed is the one that gives problem when scrolling down and up in gmail threaded message.
